It's Fall...

...And I am falling behind in my garden updates. I will try to make some posts even into the winter, but as you can tell I have slowed down a lot from Spring.

This time of year the garden is moving into hibernation and the weather is turning. The fog above is my breath Monday morning - our first frost to hit the car windows. We've had a couple light frosts, but this was the first I had to scrape from the windows.

The grass was highlighted in white, although many protected areas did not get condensation this time. Today many very tender plants like Basil and Tomato have been killed. Many hardy and semi-hardy plants are still fine.

Ah, the autumn...the last warm sunny days are great with smell and sounds of fallen leaves.

The sound of little paws crunching though the many piles brings a smile.

The Red River of the North had a late flood this year with a very wet September.

Just last week the river was about 7.5 feet above flood stage - enough to cover no parking signs on the low roads. If I recall this was close to a record for fall. Today it is below flood stage until Spring.

Well that's my update - now I need to visit all of my bogging friends out there.

Hey Chris, glad to see you back. Our climates are so different. We haven't even had our first frost yet. Love the pictures of your four-legged friends. :)

Thanks PG, sometimes I forget that the zones of the blogs I visit are different! But that makes it interesting. Yes, those are our furry children - they can be great fun.

I hope you are located uphill enough from the river to be out of the flood zone.
Your puppy is not just cute. He's good at garden cleanup too. One leaf down and a thousand to go.

Northern Shade, we are out of the flood zone so that is thankfully not on our list of worries.

Puppies will chew and grab anything :-) She especially likes to find the ends of carrots I throw out. The other day she was making sure the birds didn't miss any sunflower seeds on the ground.

I was just laughing this morning when my dog ran through the accumulation of fallen leaves. Sounded like a herd of buffalo;) We should be seeing that frosty white stuff stuck on everything this weekend. Temps are supposed to be in the 20's.

Dear Chris,
I am sitting with the space heater on this morning. No frost here, yet, but any morning I expect to see some. The gardens are winding down. I picked the last of the tomatoes. The squirrels will get the rest.
Lovely frosty morning pictures.
Will you be traveling this winter?
Sherry

Hi Roses and Lilacs...I just love taking the dogs for walks and hearing the crunch-crunch of their steps. At least you will get a few tomatoes before the frost hits :-)

Sherry, it would be fun to migrate south for a bit - but the only traveling we will do is North!

The winter is fun too - sometimes makes the growing season better. We are running the electric heater a bit these days. I have some carrots that will have to come out before the ground is frozen, everything else is done for the season.

Hi Cheryl...thanks! That first photo was a chance capture...just when I breathed out I wanted a shot.

The dogs are very happy - Dakota will love the change in seasons...we will have to get a sweater for the little one.

I found your comment on Lilacs and Roses' site and had to see what your part of the country looks like now. Brrr! Here in S. Illinois, we will be catching up to you in no time with the cold temps. I think it's supposed to drop into the 30s here next week. I like the way you use the dogs to tell your story. Unfortunately, we are pet-less for a while where we're living now. I miss the critters!

Thanks for visiting walk2write. It's always interesting to watch how the season differ in each area. The dogs would be disappointed if they didn't get the spotlight once-in-a-while :-)

My Dad who lives, in NW N. Dak. had a snowstorm a couple weeks ago with about 8 inches of snow. I remember snow on Halloween, when I was a kid, but this was really early.
Stay warm!

Hi Connie...I saw that Western ND got some snow earlier. Today (10-26) we got some, but this Halloween should be snow free...I'm not quite ready for the big snow yet ;-)
