First Snow 2008

I will call this our first snow of the season...with a howling wind, we received a bit of snow that is sticking around for the day. I'm sure by tonight it will be mostly gone. Next week is supposed to have some pretty nice days, so this will not last - but it's a first look.

Dakota was not too excited yet...

Snow covered most of the plants today - I think many will suffer from the snow and overnight freeze.

A few days ago it was rain we had, and the last late flowers were still trying to race the freeze. I think some have missed their deadline to produce seeds...

The sunflowers did produce, and birds are happy

How beautiful your garden looks with the frosting of snow. I know it probably will do some damage though. Too bad some things didn't get to make seed yet. :( Dakota doesn't look to happy about the weather either, lol

Hi Perennial Gardener...even the snow and frost can add some great interest. I'm not too worried about damage at this point - just waiting to see what lasts the longest. The new flower bed should carry through some perennials, but self seeders may not do well since I started that one late.

Funny thing with Dakota is she usually loves the bad winter weather - but this might be too much like rain for her (she doesn't like so much).

You got a whole lot more snow than we did. The winds blew thru here at about 60-mph. A few snowflakes but they only lasted about 10 minutes.

A little preview of things to come;)

Hi Marnie...well it is all gone now. Today is still cold, but tomorrow should be better - the weatherman said today was more like November.

Cheryl...seeds are always nice :-). Dakota runs through the snow on her own - and sometimes pulling me behind a leash - but she doesn't do any sledding...well unless you count that one time I broke our little plastic sled (she did pretty good then).

Dear Chris,
Lovely snow on flowers. I think snow is pretty as long as it melts quickly! Glad yours did not stay around too long. It did freeze again last night. I am waiting for daylight to see what was nipped. It is late in the season. Seeing the poppies was fun. I only have them in the spring!
Putting the gardens to rest now and getting the winter projects out!

I can't believe it snowed already - we've already pulled the vegetable garden up in anticipation of frost - and our dogs weren't too impressed with the snow either.

I think it was too wet.

Sherry...yes, the snow does look nice - it will have plenty of time to look nice soon though ;-). Those poppies probably would not normally be blooming now, but I planted that area late in the summer to get the bed started. I will have to think of some nice winter projects this year.

Hi Sarah...I just dug the last of the carrots, so the garden is basically done for the season now. Usually Dakota would love a good snow, but I think this time was a bit like rain. Wait 'til winter then I can post pictures of her having a great time.

Dear Chris,
I am felting this winter! It is so fun. I forgot how much I enjoy creating. The gardens have been my focus for so very long. I have my herbs harvested and I am "kind of" ready for winter...
Stay warm.

Hi Sherry - thanks for stopping by. It seems like a great idea to have some creative projects ready for the winter. I tend to get a bit more research done and finally organize the household records.

We stay very snug in the winter- we do have two furry little heaters now!
